Association for Religion, Ecology and Society (ARES)

The Association for Religion, Ecology, and Society was originally created as the Environmental Ministry Network. The title changed in June 2006, and the mission is the same, only broader in scope. The Environmental Ministry Network was built on environmental ministries throughout the country that work locally to initiate effective and sustainable environmental practices in their communities. All traditions have reasons to honor the earth, and whatever the reasons behind one’s environmental concerns, the ARES is a chance to join together in defense of our only environment. Membership is free and open to anyone who is interested in nature or ecology and is willing to live a more eco-conscious life. www.arecology.org

California Interfaith Power and Light (CIPL)

California Interfaith Power and Light (CIPL) is galvanizing a religious response to global warming as the moral issue of our time. All major faith traditions call us to be good stewards of the earth, therefore we must work together to address the grave threat to humanity and all of Creation posed by global warming. Since our founding in 2001, we have mobilized religious support for landmark legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California, educated hundreds of thousands of congregants, and worked with every major religious denomination in the state. CIPL member congregations are leading by example, reducing CO2 emissions in our own houses of worship by over 20 million pounds. www.interfaithpower.org

Catholic Conservation Center

The mission of the Catholic Conservation Center is to promote ecology, environmental justice, and the stewardship of creation in the light of sacred Scripture and living Tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Their goal is to help bring about the ecological conversion called for by Pope John Paul II. The Catholic Conservation Center website focus on Roman Catholic teaching.  The Center provides an opportunity for Catholics and all people of good will to learn about the Catholic tradition as it relates to ecology, environmental justice, and the stewardship of creation.  The Center welcomes visitors from all faiths.  conservation.catholic.org

Christian Environmental Association

The Christian Environmental Association is a nationwide organization joined together to promote Biblical environmental stewardship within the Christian community. Their mission is defined as "Serving the Earth, Serving the Poor."Through the CEA, individuals, churches, college fellowships, and Christians ministries can participate in a wide variety of national and international programs to increase awareness of global environmental issues and problems. The CEA also distributes a magazine, Target Earth, which serves to keep members informed and linked together. cesc.montreat.edu/ceo/CEA/

Earth Ministry

Founded in 1992, Earth Ministry’s mission is to inspire and mobilize the Christian community to play a leadership role in building a just and sustainable future. The ministry works in partnership with congregations and individuals to practically respond to this great moral challenge through education, individual and congregational lifestyle choices, and organizing for social change through environmental advocacy. Earth Ministry directly supports a network of 150 congregational activists (Colleagues) representing over 100 Puget Sound area congregations, and has a membership of approximately 1,500. While rooted in the Christian faith, many of its members come from diverse spiritual traditions. Earth ministry programs and resources are available to all. www.earthministry.org

Earth and Spirit Council

Volunteer organization of environmental and spiritual leaders, activists, and citizens. www.earthandspirit.org

Earth Literacy Companions (ELC)

Organization which focuses on the work of Thomas Berry, a geologian who emphasizes the integration of the wonders of the Earth into a spiritual tradition or New Cosmology. www.wiserearth.org

Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN)

EEN is a unique evangelical ministry whose purpose is to "declare the Lordship of Christ over all creation" (Col. 1:15-20). EEN was formed because we recognize many "environmental" problems are fundamentally spiritual problems. EEN's flagship publication, Creation Care magazine, provides you with biblically informed and timely articles on topics ranging from how to protect your loved ones against environmental threats to how you can more fully praise the Creator for the wonder of His creation.www.creationcare.org/

Friend Energy Project

This Web site is sponsored by members of the Quaker faith, also known as the Society of Friends. It has been active in energy and environmental concerns since 1996. www.quaker.org/fep

Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences

IFEES networks world-wide with NGOs, international organisations, academic bodies and grass roots organisations and invites collaboration from and individuals from all persuasions who are also dedicated to the maintenance of the Earth as a healthy habitat for future generations of humankind as well as other living beings. http://www.ifees.org.uk/

National Association of Evangelicals (NAE)

"The mission of the National Association of Evangelicals is to extend the kingdom of God through a fellowship of member denominations, churches, organizations, and individuals, demonstrating the unity of the body of Christ by standing for biblical truth, speaking with a representative voice, and serving the evangelical community through united action, cooperative ministry, and strategic planning." Like many religious organizations they appear to be struggling to define their position on environmental issues such as global warming. In January 2006, the National Association of Evangelicals decided that it would not take a stance on global warming, and released a letter stating that "global warming is not a consensus issue." In response, the Evangelical Climate Initiative released a statement on February 8, 2006 calling for action to fight global warming. On January 17th, 2007 it was announced that the NAE would join a group of prominent scientists in signing statements that demand "urgent changes in values, lifestyles and public policies to avert disastrous changes in climate." http://www.nae.net/

National Religious Partnership for the Environment

The National Religious Partnership for the Environment was founded in 1993 by four major religious organizations and alliances that together serve tens of millions of Americans. The religous organizations are :1)the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2) the National Council of Churches of Christ (NCCC), 3)the Coalition on Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL), and 4) the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN). Rather than being guardedly committed to a strained coalition, member groups have found in the Partnership a way to be themselves, together. While the Partnership has identified common messages and priorities, each faith group has found its own points of entry and prepares and distributes its own materials. www.nrpe.org

Network Alliance of Congregations Caring for the Earth (NACCE)

In 1986 when NACCE was formed, very few people of faith in North America considered the destructive exploitation of planet Earth to be a religious issue. Twenty years later there are hundreds of denominational and interfaith religious organizations (with websites) that consider the Care of Earth, or Care of Creation, as a central tenet of their faith. Regional networks of faith communities are forming across the country to nurture earth-healing ministries, linking the Integrity of Creation to Justice and Peace. www.nacce.org/

Quaker Earthcare Witness

Quaker Earthcare Witness encourages Friends to explore the spiritual roots of humanity's relationship to the earth. We seek a transformation in attitudes toward the Earth and all living beings. As time is limited to prevent further irreversible damage, we support informed, spirit-led action on all environmental issues: pollution, toxic wastes, conservation, recycling, energy use, global warming, loss of species and habitats, loss of arable lands, and population pressures. QEW staff and supporters lead workshops, give talks, and staff the Earthcare Center at FGC Gatherings. We also have a presence at many Yearly Meeting sessions. www.quakerearthcare.org

Sacred Ground International

The Web of Creation is maintained by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and is supported through grant funding, sponsorship and endorsement from a variety of faith-based sources. www.webofcreation.org

Spiritual Quotes
But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven.  It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it, from the beginning of the year to its end. (Deuteronomy 11:10-12)
Viewpoints

I don't think God is going to ask us how he created the earth, but he will ask us what we did with what he created. -- Reverend Rich Cizik, National Association of Evangelicals

Viewpoints

Our first response, spiritually and emotionally, must be one of humility, brokenness, and repentance.  We must repent for the way in which we have all contributed to the environmental problems - even without our knowing it.  And we must enter into this area with humility and brokenness through prayer.  Our brokenness gives God the opportunity to make us whole again. --Tri Robinson in Saving Gods Green Earth
